Photogrammetry is the art, science and technology through which the acquisition of reliable information about physical objects and the environment in general is achieved through processes of recording, measuring and interpreting photographic images and electromagnetic radiation patterns.
An important feature of Photogrammetry is that it is closely related to the development of Technology. Thus, photogrammetric methodologies are constantly reformed following closely the technological developments of Digital Information.
The fundamental principle used in photogrammetry is triangulation. By taking photos from at least two different locations, the “viewing lines” can be deployed from each camera to the object’s points. These optical lines, sometimes called radii due to their optical nature, intersect mathematically to produce the three-dimensional coordinates of the points of interest.
